Padre Island and Mustang Island are separated only by the small pass of water called Fish Pass. If you go to Padre Island it would be foolish not to go ahead and see Mustang Island as well.
The cost to enter the state park is $5 per adult, but an annual pass is only $70. This will get you into any Texas State Park for a whole year for free. If you plan to be in Texas for a while like we have been it will pay for itself in no time.
This park is 3,954 acres but Rich and I only saw a very small part of it. We walked a short part of the beach, and yes we collected a few shells, but we did not drive any of the paths or walk any trails. My walking ability is not what it used to be and I was tiring quickly. This beach was also filled with tons of jellyfish and lots of birds.
Just being at the beach, feeling the sand and water on your feet, and smelling the fresh ocean air is relaxing and rejuvenating. I may have to go back with a lawn chair and sit for the whole day with my feet in the water.
Mustang Island is home to over 400 bird species and lots of wildlife including raccoons and deer, but of course we didn’t see either of these. And one might think that there are wild mustang horses roaming the island, but they are no longer there.
If you are ever near Corpus Christi, Texas, don’t miss seeing Mustang Island State Park or the Padre Island National Seashore.

I was excited when I saw Mustang Park, assuming there were horses. We just got our state park annual pass, so if we wind up on Padre Island, we'll check it out anyway. Thanks for the heads up.
